Plumeria (Frangipani) - A Botanical Study

Plumeria, also known as Frangipani, are a beautifully vibrant tropical flower. I encounter them being grown in people’s yards fairly frequently here in California. They are heavily associated with Hawaii, despite not actually being native there (similar to pineapples in that respect). The flowers are used to make all of the famous leis.

Plumeria does not produce nectar and as such uses trickery to promote pollination. At night they have their strongest fragrance which attracts moths, such as the Hawkmoth, who are attracted to the scent. Although there is no nectar for them to drink, their attempts lead to the spread of pollen. Pretty cool!

Really enjoyed this one! Last month I did a study of the Yucca plant and I had several people comment about pushing the painted look further - for this one I decided to lean a lot more towards a watercolor look and I really like it! This one for sure feels a lot more like a painting.

Print Test

Behind the scenes:

I did a series of edits in Photoshop to create the watercolor + canvas background and felt inspired to re-create the postprocessing in the compositor! It worked fairly well which allowed me to create the animated version!

I’ve only ever seen frangipaniers with white flowers, maybe a subspecies ?

Lovely work! It’s really hard to identify this as 3d … the water color look works magnificently.

Thank you! There’s a surprising amount of different colored Frangipanis. Apparently there are 18 accepted species as well as 368 registered cultivars. Quite a bit of diversity!
