hi volks,
does anyone know, how to provide single segments of a surface with different colors/materials, without texturing? is it possible at all? i thought of a chessboard or a chequered flag for example.
thanks very much.

You can assign different materials to different faces of a mesh; find the slidery control that says “1 MAT 1” and hit “new” under it to create a new “material slot” for the object, which you can then assign to selected faces using the ASSIGN button and so forth.
The new slot will automatically be linked to the same material as the first, so it won’t be different; you’ll need to go make a new one or link the slot to a different one in the materials buttons, where there is also a “N MAT M” slider. (For those, BTW, N is the material you’re working with and M is the number the mesh has total, so 2 MAT 3 means your on “page two out of three”, more or less.)
If you just want to apply a checkered texture to something, there’s one of those somewhere, possibly coming in 2.43, that lets you essentially combine any two other materials into a single checker pattern.
Heh, if you’re still confused, do exactly this:
Select mesh. Tab into edit mode. Select the faces you wish to have a different color (or material) than the rest of the mesh.
Press F9 for the edit buttons. In the materials tab click new then assign.
Press F5 for the shading/material buttons. The very first item under the material tab should read [v][ MA:Material ][2][X]…
Click the little ‘2’ (or whatever the number is) to the right of the material name and click the ‘Single User’ prompt that pops up.
Now you can play with the colors without affecting the first material in the list. This is what Star Weaver is talking about: each object can have multiple materials attached. Use the N Mat M slider (should read something like “2 Mat 2” or “2 Mat 1” as you manipulate it) to select which attached material you wish to edit.
Hope this helps.
