Thought id model these balls and then ran into a few problems with doing grass in cycles due to it not allowing hair - found an excellent tutorial on doing them individually 
Learnt a few new things such as adding sky texture etc
for this scene i think BI would have been just as good if no better; You could have got some nicer looking grass. But as it is its not bad at-all
