Polar Bear Cub WIP

Started the rig, still need some work and controls, need to better the facial expressions and add control bones for them but all in all, its heading the right direction.

ashutoshparida that cub looking good. … Am wondering is there enough polygons for skinning and facial expressions…

Waiting for the furry one…

I hope this answers your question about if there is enough polys for skinning and facial expressions
And I will finish the full rigging before texturing and adding fur.

Cheers!

Cool, but you need to work on the shoulder. The arm joint should bend at the top of the shoulder blade, not the bottom. If it doesn’t do that it makes him look really hunched over, which is the last thing you want for a polar bear.

I am not sure I understand what you mean, but the rig isn’t finish and this was just to show that it does have enough poly’s to rig and for facials.

I am working on the rig still, so perhaps you could elaborate what you mean a bit since I don’t follow ya

Cheers and Thanks for the feedback  I appreciate a lot

See the form on the shoulder area? Well, it’s not bending. The arm joint is based right at belly level, but it should start closer to the spine.

Lol, it is bending, you are just failing to see it, first because those are just super quick pose, second, well, I am still working on the rig and all. I didn’t take the time to make super nice poses because I am still working on it lol!

Cheers!

Bending or not, the joint should be closer to the spine. Or, if you already have a joint there, bend it a lot more because I can’t notice anything.

Here, just to make you happy, here is a shot in the viewport with the rig and a quick pose. It is there, I am working on it instead of taking time to make all sort of pose to show. Rig almost done, only a few minor tweeks here and there and putting custom bone shapes for better rig view.

Cheers!

Okay. The bone that links the upper arm to the spine is the one I’m talking about. For the final upright pose I think it should be bent down some. But if this is just to show facial expression you don’t have to worry about it yet.

Owldude: Yhea, I hear ya, I get what you ment

As far as I am taking this, I will do a few pose shot and all, but I think I will also animate him a bit for the fun of it once I am done with it. I am currently starting textures and such.

Cheers!

Here is a fur preset I created for the fur using procedural as base so far on a side sphere. I think it looks fairly close to polar bear fur. Now I think I can go ahead and start applying this to the bear

Any C&C is more then welcome

Cheers!

That looks great! It’s going to be pretty hard to get that to flow smoothly over the bear model though.

looking good  not to worry Owldude, JeannotLandry is our resident hair and fur specialist lol

Ooh, I might have to get his help for a few things. =)

peter18: Lol, I wouldn’t call myself a fur/hair expert, but I do get by with a bit of study. Luckily for me, I have a Siberian cat which as long beigish fur which I studied quite a bit with various lighting (in my apartment) :stuck_out_tongue:

Owldude: Well, it isn’t as hard as you think. Most people find it hard because they start with way too many control hair. Instead, start lower, and divide the fur into parts such as long, medium and short fur.

Here is a shot without any combing yet, just simple dynamics set to very low mass, high bending stiffness and overall stiffness with air drag of 1.5. (Will comb from here on though, just thought it looked funny :stuck_out_tongue: I had to post it hehehe Also still need to do the skin texture, right now its just a simple shader with baked AO and simple skin sss as well as the eyes, tongue and teeth textures)

Cheers!

Owldude: Nice rabbit  However, lighting is really important to bring out the fur realism. I’d say, if you’d have something to work on in the rabbit scene, it would most likely be the lighting

Here is a dynamic animation test of the polar bear fur with the animated ball

Cheers!

Alright, I think the combing went well  Now I need to add fur color variations like dirt and brighter cleaner areas and such. Also need to work on the skin textures, tongue, teeth, eyeballs, etc…

Cheers

You are nailing it Jeannot! I am particularly impressed that the rig can stand and go down on all fours. I like the dynamics test, might want to tone it down a bit, I think it moves too much.

3dmentia: thanks  Yes, I agree, my dynamic fur test moves too fast, but that is mostly due to the animation which isn’t timed properly as well as being to test how well the fur holds before breaking I made the animation faster then I would normally do
As far as the rig goes, its a very very simple rig! I have been rigging for a very long time and I must say, the simpler the rig, the better

Thanks for the reference

Here is a pose test to see how well the fur holds when the model is posed and also to show how the fur reacts to direct light and back light

Cheers!

Here is an update on the Fur and its colors, as well as some basic skin texture with basic bump map and spec map, still need to work on that though

Let me know what you guys think

Cheers!
