Hi, I wanted to create a poll to see what other Blender thinks about the UNDO option which in my opinion is very very slow, every time I have to UNDO something it takes a couple of seconds to bring back the previous state which is too much for each time you want to UNDO even for the most simple things. I think this should work faster but what do you think?

I think you’re either using a very old system, working with very dense meshes, or found a bug. 90% of the time undo works instantly for me.

I’m using the latests versions with W7 64 bit with scenes arround 900.000 faces. But I’m not doing mesh deformations or sculpting, just moving objects and cameras and even though that makes the UNDO option to lag for a couple of seconds.

Personally I have not found the undo to be particularly slow on its own either. To my mind it becomes slow when the whole program becomes slow because of hi polygon counts . What I miss more than speed are unlimited undos that list stuff you have done in a menu system ( like in Max).

anaho: maybe your looking for “Undo History”? Ctrl+Alt+Z
SamCameron: Blender’s undo system as far as i can get infos from the documentation ([http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Vitals/Undo\_and\_Redo](http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Vitals/Undo_and_Redo)) does make a copy of the entire object for the undo system, so the slowdown for huge objects wouldn’t surprise me.

I think to recall that Blender has no undo per se? I might be wrong though, wasn’t following the development process too closely lately.

Doesn’t it keep copies of the whole scene in the memory and reverts the state. Instead of just undoing what you did, it re-does what was. The bigger the scene the slower the re-un-doing 😃
Something along the lines, that .blend is not a file format per se either , but a scene/memory snapshot stored.

I’ve noticed the same (Linux- Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit), it can be very slow, and I can often experience the application killing and Blender just exists if I undo over some number of steps. My new habit has been to reload the file and save incrementally (dozens of files on the HD). I didn’t seem to have that issue in Windows. This is using r51643 from Build Bot.

for big scene wtih large amout of objects
the history undo will slow down blender

but you can turn it off in user preference!

salutations

That’s a big ditto for me as well. My HP dv5 lags a little with 4.5 million faces. But it’s almost instant on my desktop which is an HP Pav Elite 210Y with a GTX 465. That goes for redo undo also.
