A question in another post made me think, Games designers and Film animators seem to use 3DS Max and Maya, however I’m not realy sure where Blender sits, from what I can gather its mainly used for freelance work however I would like to see what blender is most used for and what you use it for.
(If this is not in the correct place of the fourm please feel free to move)
is blender used by companies then as a game dev tool or do they prepher the use of 3DS Max/Maya? when you are saying for game dev do you mean just for yourself or for a company?
Almost all established game studios use max and maya + zbrush or mudbox. I don`t know any studios out there that use Blender exclusively but I do not doubt they are somewhere out there (the small ones). That said, Blender is a good choice for new game development studios (trying to get one up and running with a few guys here right now) as max and maya licences are expensive to maintain.
I know that this is kind of side tracking my own poll but as ppl are here who seem to know roughtly how to get into the industries or at least seem to know more than me, how are you lot planning on/how did you get into the industry? what should I have to prove that I can do whats required? (if im looking to get into game dev)
I use blender for pretty much anything but mainly:
Making models for my game development
Freelance work (the rare occasions when I bother with it)
and hobby modeling, I do find modeling to be quite a nice hobby.
I believe the vast majority use Blender to generate pretty pictures, that is with no animation in mind. I’m not being sarcastic. If you make another poll that could prove/disprove it, I would think that would show it.
The reason I chose Blender over 3ds Max(which I am already familiar with) is that I get the feeling that Blender will see more use in the games industry, rather than the film industry. As I predicted five years ago, Blender is being used in small teams and studios, and for many different reasons - one being that it has solid python support which is considered a must have language on your CV. Also, thanks to mobile phones and tablets, we are seeing the return of lone wolf bedroom coders actually able to make money, and so on a shoe-string budget Blender makes far more sense than 3ds Max…better availability too.
