Polys visible despite smooth shading + quads + dense mesh

Hello!

I guess this has been asked before my searches didn’t prevail - so

I have a high poly poly object. A displaced cylinder. With smooth shading or auto smooth polys are visible.

My next thought was edge flow may be contributing but after a quite dirty remesh with ‘better’ flow, I can still see artifacts.

Thanks for your help in advance!

The problem is that your object consists of benting quads. Vertices of each polygon don’t lay on a same plane that causes shading artifacts. If you look very closely, you will see that such “dark lines” appear on places where quads are bent.

My suggestion would be either:

  • Triangulate faces. Go to edit mode, press A to select all faces and press Ctrl+T to triangulate them;
  • Use Remesh modifier.

In general, I think you shouldn’t care so much of small shading artifacts, until you have close-up render or other rare situation where it might be significant.

I think the main problem is that the edge loops do not flow with the form. The edge loops should define the flow of the object.

(This is with subdivision)

Thank you thank you so much guys. I thought maybe this is overkill since you can’t notice it unless your up close but I still wanted to better myself by understanding what is going on. Thanks dudes!

Morning. Can you please remember to mark one of the two answers above as the solution. It helps future people with the same kind of issue.
Happy Blending.
