Portrait of an exoplanet nearing its end

This is TOI-6255 b: an exoplanet nearing the end of its existence.

Its parent star, TOI-6255, belongs to one of the most common types of objects in the galaxy. It is a red dwarf smaller, cooler and less massive than the Sun.

Unlike most exoplanets, TOI-6255 b orbits so close to its star that it is being stretched by its gravitational pull. It is estimated that, in about 400 million years, the planet will be torn apart, leaving only a trail of debris slowly falling onto the star.

From the surface of the planet, the star dominates the sky, partially melting the surface into large rivers of lava. Slide between the two following images to see the difference with what we have here on Earth.


Being so close to its star (only about twice the distance between the Earth and the Moon), the planet completes an orbit in less than six hours. In the image below, the red arc materializes the distance where the planet will start tearing itself apart. This shows how close it is from tidal disruption.
