Possible Particle trouble in SVN-Land?

I’m playing with the new particle system, and was wanting to try making an explosion. No troubles so far…

But when I make a mesh object - add a particle system and set it up (still no trouble) - and then add the “Explode” modifier on top of that, the rendered results are not what I’m expecting…

I was hoping to see rendered fragments flying off in various directions (with random particle rotation) of my test sphere…

Instead, all the particles render as a halo material based on the material color I had set for the sphere - the remaining parts of the original emitter mesh are visible, but the expected mesh fragments (via the Explode modifier) are halos…

What am I doing wrong?

I am awful at explaining these things, but I’ll try and here is an example.

You have to make sure that you set the Visualization to None and have it draw the emitter. Create a vertex group and assign it to the explode modifier. The file will probably help more than my explanation. lol

Edit:

Here is the same thing, but more of an explosion type effect.

Thanks Remmy. I was looking at your examples - the step I was missing was the Vertex Group part, but I’m not sure what that does as there are no vertexes (plural for vertex?) assigned to that group…

I’ll give a whirl from scratch and see if I can get the desired results with this new little nugget of knowledge…

Many thanks,
