My power cord I’m working on… anyone know how to make a metallic material for the prongs?

I would probably try tweaking on http://matrep.parastudios.de/index.php?action=view&material=127-shiny-metal-or-metal-like&fc=2 or thereabouts.
Realize raytracing shiny metal will make your lighting/environment setup become very important, otherwise your metal will not seem like metal at all.
Can always texture map it, but then the risk will be the metal feeling “flat” if you’re not careful.
I’m confused as to what I’m supposed to do with the link… is there supposed to be a tutorial on how to set it up? or download it? I tried downloading it but it just opened a blend file with simply a plane in it and nothing else and the layout was confusing.
You download it, the material is in the file. In your project File->Append (and append) the material to your scene. Then back in your project it will show up in the material drop-down box. For more info Google “Blender Append”… http://download.blender.org/documentation/oldsite/oldsite.blender3d.org/142_Blender%20tutorial%20Append.html
came up for example.
If that’s too much, then on your current material, scroll down and there will be a “Mirror” panel. Enable it. There will be a “Roughness” slider, decrease it to about 90%. That will also get you close to metal.
