How would I go about precisely changing the angle of that apex? The thing consists of 3 parts, I’m guessing join mesh, remove doubles, set 3d cursor somewhere in the middle, cut mesh in half, mirror modify and … yes, the rest of my glorious ideas involves severe mesh distortion on top. Lattice deform maybe?
It’s just a couple of degrees, so the deform wouldn’t be too massive - squeezing that top ornament will hurt a bit, like bad typography, but atm I got no better option Please?
Well for the outer part it will be just rotating over the ridge… but the inner part also has to be resized in Z direction… i first wanted to try something with bones… but well… i’m also too lazy right now to do the correct math… and even a screenshot with some overpainting… …but to bend/rotate my example 10 degree up i had to resize in Z by 0.9356 something…
I would split off these parts (working with half / mirror).
After adjusting the angle in the rest of it add the big center leaf back at the top. The smaller leaf to the side gets shrunk or stretched to fit into its new location.
The lower part just needs the curlicues out to the sides adjusted - probably with proportional editing.
Use a shape key to adjust the lower part. Then you can try with several shapekeys and keep only the best result. Remember to set the shapekey to 1 so you can see its effect as you work.
I assume joining all parts across the cracks will be easiest. Then put the new slices in later. Trying to vertex by vertex repair a bent crack may / would be a nightmare.
As always - make sure to save at every stage as a new file.
If you dont realise it yet - File > Save As… and then click the plus icon to the right of the file name. This adds a 1 to the end of the file name and the number is increased each time you click the + sign. Easy way to save variations as you work.
OK, splitting off the center ornament makes a lot of sense to me. I could then just rotate the straight part and cleanly sever the lower part that would protrude over the middle with a boolean, mirror and done… noone will see what’s behind the ornament.
The crack is not troubling me, it would probably be there in real life and the client will never notice.
Shape keys are something I never even brushed… I just saw some tutorials, but never really used any. Time to check it out, thought I think I can get it done the dirty way
AND I did NOT know about the +1 thing! That’ll make my life way easier in the future.
