Preserve Parenting While Joining Meshes

Is there a way to preserve the parenting relationship of two meshes when you join them? That is to say, If I have Object1 parented to a face on Mesh1, and Object2 parented to a face on Mesh2, is there a way to join Mesh1 and Mesh2 and preserve the parenting of Object1 and Object2 in the new joined mesh?

You could have a look at hooks to see if they fit your purpose, which I doubt, so you’d probably be better of using armatures for this kind of work from the interface.

But this is probably altogether the idea for a new python script that you could post about in the python subsection of the forums.
