Prevent cloth from sliding of

Hi, pretty new at blender, so any help is appreciated. I am trying to make a ghostlike animation. Cloth floating over a simple armature. This all works very well, right until the point I want the ghost to move it’s arms. In theory the cloth over him should move with him, in practice it glides of.

How can I stop it from gliding of? So far, I’ve tried pinning and hooking. But that doesn’t work, seems to horribly distort the cloth. Also, I can’t start the cloth hooked, as it has to fall down first. I am really at a loss here. The animation included shows what’s happening better then I can describe.

I’ve included the blender file. And a video of the effect happening.

Well, you only want the viewer to see the outside of the cloth, right? So on the inside, make the topology have wrist cuffs. The viewer won’t see it, but it’ll keep the cloth from sliding off the armature.

Another option is this: typically you’re not actually animating the cloth falling onto your model. As in, that won’t be part of your finished video. So what you can do is, let the cloth fall onto your model, and then ‘apply’ the cloth physics so the mesh actually becomes the draped cloth itself. Once that’s done, you can pin it as you like, and do cloth physics again so it will continue to drape naturally over the course of the animation.

Another option would be to pose the armature in such a way that it compensated for the slipping of the cloth. In other words, if the cloth starts to slip, have the armature move in such a way as to catch and prevent the slippage. It will look super natural to the viewer.

You could also try messing with some of the sliders in the cloth physics panel. A lot of those affect the stiffness, the roughness, and a lot of other aspects of the cloth. If you experiment a bit and get to know what those sliders do and how they interact with each other to influence the behavior of the cloth, you can probably find a combination that will suit your needs. Remember - ghosts don’t just wear any old sheet. They wear a sheet with specific physical properties, and that panel is where you creatively set those properties.

Thanks for the answer. I am not making a video perse, but a model for a game. I’ve tried first dropping the cloth, then applying it and then working onward from that, but I can’t seem to pin the cloth to the model at all. I really like the wrist cuffs thing, but would not really know how to do that. I get really weird effects if I hook to invisible and then move that.

The model is a ghost/spirit kinda of thing, so the sheet should indeed by metaphysical :eyebrowlift:

I’ve tried the pinning thing, with an empty object and uploaded it here. It becomes a real weird mess, with the cloth falling rapidly and deforming weirdly.

I answered this question on BlenderSE. You just turn up the friction in the cloth collision settings.

Yes. Thanks for that answer. It works in a way.
Still will try to make that cuff thing work.

If its not working enough, turn it up more. There is also a setting on the collision object for friction too.

Well, the thing is, it is working, but I fear I might trade in smoothness somewhere along the way. That being said, for now it works brilliantly at friction 15.
