Problem about blender 2.26 on XP...

When i install blender 2.26 on xp it works fine. Then when i restart the pc, i find that the blend files are not associated with blender anymore, and that if i start blender it crashes. I have to reinstall blender every time i want to use it. I dont know what to do. I never experienced it before. I reinstalled all the system and it’s clean and running fine.

Specs:
P4 1.7ghz
384mb ram
winxp home
geforce4 4200ti

Do you have any other programs running in the background such as Instant messengers, AntiVirus, or others? When you install it make sure none of these programs are running. Turn off any software starting at boot time.

Just some suggestions. Not running a Microsoft prodcut (Linux) but these are the basics to start with.

Hope something hits for ya’,

Try this. Go to:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Account\Application Data\Not a Number\Blender

where ‘Your Account’ is the registered user, and move those four files onto your desktop. Restart Blender. It will create four new files in that folder. If this fixes the problem then one of those files is corrupted so delete them all. Since there are four new files the only reason to move the ones on the desktop back is if you are using settings that are not default.

flight, i already tried it but :

1 - i just have 2 files (.b.blend and.blog), and not 4 like you said
2 - even reinstalling and restarting blender doesn’t create new files!

mmm i never had such problems

thanks for the help… my actual project is becoming the harder one, cos of all those problems…

have you tried a total re-install of WinXP.

from a clean HDD or clean partition.

i have a comparable system (except faster)

e.g. i have winxp and a geforece ti 4200.

cept mines 2.4Ghz and 1Gb ram.

anyway try re-downloading it as well, becasue if they were corupted in the download that may be a problem

do a virus scan

i m using blender 2.26 fine and have only had 3 COMPLETE BLOODY CRASHES becasue of it.

e.g. crashes SO HARD that xp won’t even boot into safe mode!!!

but thats only the first time it will always boot up again after restarting about 3 times.

BLOODY BLENDER!!!

ha ha ha oh well (p.s. i re-inatalled XP about 5 times, and on the fifth atempt it worked brilliently and booted in about 10 seconds)

ha ha ha see ya

i reinstaleld ALL (xp and drivers) 3 times and it is still not working! and doing new clean partitions too. what’s the deal with those 4 files? i wonder why i just have 2 (and one is just a log file the console of blender did!)

1= BFont 25KB

2= BFS 1KB

3=BLog 1KB

4= .B (blend file) 110KB

That’s what I’ve got in my folder (on XP Pro).
All I can tell you is way back when I once messed up with changing the default screens and had the same problems you describe. I didn’t have to reinstall Blender or XP, just moved those files out as I explained.
That .blend file (.B) is the default file Blender starts with, so if you don’t have one there then that’s your problem. I don’t know the solution.

EDIT: I reread and see that you do in fact have the .B blend. I must also tell you that I use 2.23. Best to check some of the XP problem backissue threads and find someone running XP and 2.26, PM them and ask them to see what they have in that folder.

i’ll reply to that one i am just searching now

i use 2.26
and XP

i just have .Blog
i don’t seem to have b.blemd at all!!!
strange but it works fine for me.

ok have you tried re-downloading it!!!

do you have admin authority, if you do then go and look at the error logs!!

control panel, amin tools then event viewer or somthing like that.

just have a look under that.

p.s. you are installing it in all the default locations??

i know that 2.23 doesn’t even need to be installed LOL, i guess i would try using 2.26 without installing it.

ok question you say that you have to re-install every time!!!

now this may seem that i assume you are dumb, but after installing it what blender do you choose.

do you click on
blender.exe
or
blender-2.26-windows.exe??

because the second one is the INSTALL FILE!!!
and the first one is the PROGRAM FILE

i sugest you go to
program files, blender foundation, blender2.26 then click on “blender.exe”

i have a gut feeling it is this that is the problem.

p.s. tell me if this works coz if it does i will crap my pants laughing LOL

yea, thats definately gonna help, he’s one of the richest men in history, but who gives… :-?

lol i work with computers and 3d software since around 9 years… and i am not dumb lol … i hope you were ironic with your “help”, cos it was hilarious!

anyway i tried putting the data from
c:\documents and settings\user\application data\blender foundation\blender

into

c:\documents and settings\user\dati applicazioni\blender foundation\blender

and it seems to work now! (i have winxp italian) – i guess this was the problem someway, though i think this is just another coincidence – a weird one – cos i worked with blender since the 1.7 version and on machines running linux, win95, winme, win98, win2000 and winxp pro and home, and i never had such problems! even on this pc i am using since 1 year or so –

oh italian XP!!!

thats cool that it works.

p.s. i was serious about the previous sugestion, you would understand that you can’t tell what other people understand about computers.

and also problems usually have a simple answer.

it was serious as there have occasionally been things that seem obiouse to people that i have overlooked. or somthing simple i just havn’t tried.

never know it could have been the problem, jsut a last ditch effort to help.

but yeah it was pretty a pretty damn funny idea.

and i wasn’t assuming you were dumb. LOL

I just installed XP last night and of course fired up blender right away.
and it was all funked up!
but I turned off anitaliasing on my geforce4 and everything is just peachy now.

btw my new system is
athlon XP 28000
1 gig ram

I love having lots of RAM!!!

well my joy was not true joy… cos it is not working anymore… i also changed the geforce4 to a softquadro4, to get better opengl support, but blender keeps on crashing saying that it made and exception on nvogl.dll, that is the opengl driver of nvidia… i tried all… but blender keeps on:

  • on opening some files, crashing on nvogl.dll (in a random way, sometimes it opens a file, sometimes not)
  • crashing when i go to the camera view
  • forgetting the associations with blend files

i did all i can, reinstalled everything many times and i can not still understand – what i know is that i have a life and things to do, and blender is the only software giving me such troubles – so i will stop with it, until it will become stable enough not to require me to fuck my system just to get it working 1 time over 11 – :frowning:
