Problem making a node from an SSS skin shader node setup

I’m a beginner with nodes, and I’m having a problem duplicating a SSS skin shader. (I’ve been trying out different SSS skin shaders today to try to figure out which one works best for me.) It’s byJavierMicheal on deviantART:

I started from the Material Output (on the far right) node and went towards the left as I added the other nodes (because it was hard to follow such a big node tree for me), but when I got to the SSS node on the far left, I couldn’t figure out how to make it. I realized I should have started on the right, because that must be the start of the tree, so I deleted the material to restart. The SSS section in the Properties Panel doesn’t show up in this scene, though. When I opened a completely new Blender file to start from scratch, it was there.

Here are my questions:

  1. Why can I not get the SSS section to show up in my current project? It’d be nice to know what I’m doing wrong if it happens in future projects. I think it has something to do with the “Use shader nodes to render the material” button next to the Data drop-down button, because it’s not in my current project, but is in the new scene.
  2. How exactly do I get the SSS Node to have the absorbtion, attenuation, and contrast parameters on it? I’ve seen other SSS Nodes that had even more parameters to them, but I can’t even figure out how to get a node that I can name SSS Node into the Node Editor.

It’s a lot to ask, but if you know any advice/tutorials, please explain it to me clearly or with pictures, because I have a hard time understanding without them.

looking at the pics you posted
pic 1 is cycles render (that’s where you use the node tree in first pic)
pic 3 is BI render !! they are different and not really compatible

not had a lot of practise with SSS but I think someone will pop in and help you more

Oops, thanks for pointing out about the BI thing. When I start up Blender, I try to turn on the right settings immediately, but sometimes I forget to do things. XDD;;

I never really used BI, so I don’t recognise it myself. If Heddheld is right, then change your renderer to Cycles (it will in a drop down menu at the top).

My first question has been answered, because heddheld said the third picture was in BI. Like you, I don’t use BI, so I accidentally did not change the renderer to Cyles before. I found the way to make an SSS node in Cycles:

The problem I still need to know is the second question. Yesterday, I learned about being able to rename nodes, so I assume JavierMicheal titled the node “SSS Node.” I just don’t understand how to create a node with the absorbtion, attenuation, and contrast parameters in it. It’s the last node I need. I see that the node has an icon to the top right of it that looks like the icon for the Node Editor, but I also have no clue as to why it’s there. I’ve checked the manual and see no information about it.
