Can anyone shed some light on this for me please? What do I need to do to fix the rigging here?

thanks in advance for any replies…

You did not do anything wrong. That’s the way it will bend.

You can control the forward bending motion by adding a small target bone, called knee.l & knee.r, in front of the knee joint. Place the bone away from the current leg rig in the “Y” direction. (Hope that made some sense.)

Now, do the following:

a) Add IK Solver constraint to upper_leg.l
b) Use knee.l as the target bone (BO:)
c) Now move the leg.l bone in pose mode and it will not bend in that direction anymore

Don’t forget to do the same thing for the other leg.

[EDIT]This should also be in the animation forum. So I have moved it.[/EDIT}

The problem come from the knee joint which is in the line formed by the upper leg and lower leg, the joint don’t know in which way it has to bend .
You’ll have to move the knee joint (edit mode) a bit forward to form a wide < .

This way it’ll work normaly .
