Problem: Stabilized video with motion tracking, preview freezes, clip not stabilized?

I have been trying to stabilize some video footage with the Motion Tracking feature of Blender (2.64). Watching a couple of online tutorials, I think I have a pretty good understanding of how to process works, but still I can’t get it to work.

Here is (broadly) what I do:

  • Add two markers
  • Track selected markers (both get tracked successfully for the full duration of the clip)
  • Go to “reconstruction”
  • Enable “2D Stabilization”, incl. “autoscale” and “stabilize rotation”
  • Add one marker to the generic (?) stabilization, add the other one to the rotation

This is where I get stuck. When I scrub over my footage, I can see that there is some stabilization going on: (1) the bounding box of the footage is bigger than the view (so it is being cropped), (2) the bounding box moves while I scrub and (3) though hard to judge from choppy scrubbing, it seems to be more stable.

However, when I simply play the video, it stays stuck on the current frame. Uh oh…

Then I tried to compare the original footage with the new clip by adding the stabilized clip via “Add -> Clip” in the Video Editing view. I layered them and added a wipe effect that was fixed in the middle, so I could see any changes easily. Both shots are however identical, no cropping or stabilizing on the new clip’s side.

My question: what is going on here? Why does the preview not work, and why is the stabilization not applied to the clip? Are these two problems maybe related?

Thanks for any help!

In the VSE go to the properties panel (N key), scroll down and check that stabilise is active. Also any poor playback may be related to codec that footage is saved in. You can generate a proxy for that so Blender can play a lower quality image in the window.

Thanks for your reply.
I did find the stabilise checkbox before, didn’t make a difference.
After a few more tries, I finally did get a stabilised video. Victory! What bugs me though is that the manual method of finding tracker points makes it laborious to stabilise any panning video. I am currently looking into applications that can do this by auto-analysis of video track.
