4 days ago i finally decide to give linux a try. After 4 days of trying to partition my disk (long story) i finally get kubuntu installed.YAY :D. so far it has been working great. but i am a complete beginner at linux and have basically no idea how to do anything.
i went to the blender site dowloaded the static version of blender. i dont know what to do now. the instructions dont make any sense to me except extract to location of your choice.
I am hoping you guys can give me a helping hand getting my favourite program on linux.
you are going to want to get your open GL working…
check the ubuntu forums on installing Nvidia. or ATI propriatory drivers…
Or, join their IRC channel, and Sign in with a femail name, and ask how to get the drivers working. (Guys dont usualy go out of their way to help guys…)
then at a commandline just type:
sudo apt-get install blender
if you want yafray too
sudo apt-get install yafray
static version install is easy…
inzip in your home folder…
Make the hidden dot files visible in your filemanager… and inside the blender foler is a folder named “.blender” copy that into your home folder…
thats it
the blender ececutable is in the blender folder…
thanks alot.
how do i make the dot files visible?
the computer i have linux on isn’t connected to the internet so im transfering everything by my usb drive. does the apt get command connect to the internet? if so i need an alternative way.
Thanks
Firs things first if you dont have the internet I suggest you try an alternative Linux distro. Like SuSe which comes on 1 big DVD and has all the software you will need easily (including Blender).
However if you want to still use Kubuntu, then fair enough.
I would suggest you try using the dynamic version with python version 2.4. But if the static works for you then don’t try the dynamic.
To see “.” directories go into Konqueror, View > Show Hidden Files
They will suddenly appear slightly faded out.
Apt-get does require the internet.
In that case installing Nvidia & ATi drivers will become slightly harder(even with SuSe). But not impossible.
ok thanks thats fine with me i just used kubuntu because i heard alot of good stuff about it.
so how would i go about installing suse? just delete the old linux partition and make a new one for suse?
If you cant get the drivers working, the static version will use a software renderor.
I know nothing about suse, only that it is a pretty solid Distro, and it is supposed to be nice to new people
Here is a link to where and how to download the SuSe Images. You can either download the DVD image which will requirea DVD burner or a CD image which will require a CD burner. Note you will need I think about 7 CD’s
Read it carefully and choose to download Suse 10.2 version.
You can also buy SuSe if you want as well. Which givesyou booth the CD & DVD version and a big book too.
You will need to download the " openSUSE 10.2 Installation Media" & the " openSUSE 10.2 Add On Media, Non-OSS Add On CD"
This will give you all you need including Drivers for your Graphics card etc.
the reason it isn’t connected to the net is because i thought it didn’t work on my laptop.
but the otherday i tried it on the windows side and it worked perfectly!
so i have posted on the linux help forums trying to get to work on linux.
Try KANOTIX linux…
it is Debian based just like Ubuntu… has KDE just like Kubuntu,
BUT, unlike any ubuntu spinoff,
Kanotix is compatible with a lot more devices.
If KANOTIX dosent get your network card right, there are a bunch of utilitys to automaticaly fix most common problems.
Later on, you can even use the Ubuntu APT repositorys, to switch over to ubuntu if you want 8)
The debian verions of WINE is much better in my opinion anyways, I can play all my steam games in linux… with my Ubuntu partition they forgot to add a bunch of stuff I need to their version of wine
anyways… take a look in kanotix forums, there are a few tutorials on how to switch over to ubuntu/kubuntu/xubuntu once all your devices are properly installed.
Good luck, and welcome to the wonderful world of Linux 8)
I would suggest using Adept to install your packages. It can be found in KMenu > System > Adept Manager Manage Packages
Use adept to install your graphic card drivers. I assume you have nvidia?
Type in the search bar nvidia and install the package called nvidia-glx. When you click on the package it should list information on the right side. Read this thoroughly to find out how to enable the nvidia drivers.
Once thats done you can then download Automatix to get the proprietary stuff like DVD & win32codecs and lots more.
Automatix is a small program designed to get other stuff more quickly and painlessly.
The drivers needed for your graphics card depends on what graphics card you have. If it is an nvidia install the nvidia drivers. Do you know what graphics card you have?
To get Automatix, click on the link below it will require some copy and paste into the terminal/Konsole.
ok thanks i got the automatix thing and it worked great.
It’s kind of an older laptop and i just got it so i really dont know that much about its hardware.
is there a way to figure out what kind of card it has?
like in windows system info?
If you go to: KMenu > System > KInfoCentre, it gives you all the information about your machine.
I mainly use KInfoCentre for its useful memory diagram. If you go to the left and click on memory, it will tell you how much memory you have, how much is being and what is using it(Applications or Disk Cache) it will also tell you how much swap is being used as well.
