problem with UV mapping human eyes

hi everyone

i am new to blender and still learning.

i recently made a human model. i put eyes with the human body together as one object.
when it comes to UV map eyes i found it hard to do because when i change the UV texture for eyes , the body texture is changed too.

is there any way to UV map different part of an object seperately, or do i have to seperate eyes from body mesh?

thank you very much for taking time answer my noobish question.

What version are you using? What option are you using to do your UV map unwrap? Having the eyes outside the mesh as a separate object is a good idea. But just on the point of UV mapping, you should be able to UV map the eyes and not affect the other part of the map when it is in the same mesh. In smart projection there is an option to use selected faces. But if you just UV “unwrap” it should work automatically on just the faces you select. But more information is needed on your version and other options you are using.

i am using blender 2.54
i selected all the eye vertex as vertex group , then i just hit U and select UV unwrap to get UV pattern.
but when i try to add texture to the eyes as UV i couldnt seperate it from the main body.

thanks very much for the hint. just found the smart projection option and i will try it out

Oh, OK I think I know what you mean. However you want to unwrap is OK. U and Unwrap will be fine. That does selected faces by default.

Just so you know. there is a little button you can hit at the bottom of the UV window (with the arrow and vertexes) that allows you to toggle on and off if you see all of the map in the UV window at the same time when the faces are not selected in the viewport.

What you want for now is the default. With the cursor in the 3D view select all faces. This will show you all of the parts of the body you have UV Mapped. In the UV window, go to island select mode (the selection option to the far right) and select each section to re-size it to all fit in the UV space and not overlap.

If you want to make another UV map for the eye separately, create a new UV map and then all of the other faces will just be large squares that fill up the UV space. Size those down to a small square and put them in an unused space on the map.

That is the only way I have figured out how to do it. If there is another way someone please chime in. As far as I have been able to tell, there is no way to have a UV map that does not include all of the faces in the model.

thank you very much for the help
