Problems in 2.28,2.31,2.31a

When I select a mesh object in Windows 2000 and left-click launch a Blender file I’m not getting any access to my mesh editing , materials, rendering buttons, etc. All of my Blender files are saved as this type of file-
RIGTOP~2a.BLE. Maybe my files are corrupted due to some new rigging setting I used in 2.31a. I don’t know. I’m getting a “error loading Blender files” pop up.

This is crazy. Maybe I am overlooking something in my system reg or something. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhh, bigtime. Thanks for any help.

Look in your File Type definitions and make sure the action assigned to Open finishes like this:

…blender.exe “%1”

the “” are really important/

I don’t precisely understand your problem, but I had something similar. Once I edited a locked file [coming from a cdrom], and tried to save it [CTRL-W], and because Blender couldn’t overwrite the original file and wrote a new one with a funny name such as your file.

Then, I renamed the file in the windoz explorer to what it belongs to, but each time I opened it and saved the changes, Blender wrote again the file into a funny named file.

The solution was to save the file with F2 and give it the appropriate name within the save dialog. And then to remove the read-only lock on my folder and it’s content so that this problem doesn’t happen again for other files in it.

Perhaps this helps you… ?
I hope so!

Everything was fine up until now. This problem exists on all of my machines running Windows 2000 and the new install of 2.31a. I was thinking that since these problems started after I installed 2.31a maybe it was the culprit. I don’t know. I’ve had enough down time already with raplacing motherboards, a failed hard drive and cdburner. Some days I just wish that my computer art projects went along as smoothly as my old woodworking projects. I hate computer problems like this. For now until this problem is fixed I have to drag my Blender files to the Blender icon on my desktop. This is a pain because I have lots of files. But it keeps me working.

-Theeth, I tried that but it did not seem to work. I will try it again. I was thinking that maybe I should clear all references of Blender installations from my hard drive and start from scratch. I’ll clean the reg, the document and program file entries. Arghhhhhhhhhh!

Blend on, hopefully free of all downtime.

did you try deleting your B.blend file? maybe it’s something to do with that? Or maybe just resetting your user defaults?

I did a cleanout of all Blender system files, and did the blender.exe “%1” in the Windows Folder Options thing. No change. I’m used to dragging and dropping files so that’s the way I’m working it. Thanks for the tips if you have any more tips I will try them.

And I found that numbers 10 and 11 of my rigged files were corrupted so I did a quick apend of the armature and deleted the bad files. By the time this project is done I will be up to at least number 30 something. I save new backups every now and then.

Computers, you can’t trust em’. So save everything in multiple named file back ups. But you know that already, hehehe.

Blend on.

Well folks I think the evil app behind all of my problems is norton. I have to find another anivirus software for windows 2000 that is as stable aa norton. Any ideas? I see that it is messing with my system files in odd ways.

I’ve never had an issue with Panda Antivirus Platinum. I can’t say I 've used it on a 2000 machine, but it runs transparently on 98 and updates daily and automatically. And, the couple of times I’ve had viruses, it has a perfect track record.

Thanks for the tip.

I am using McAfee without any problem. But before you buy a new antivirus software, could you just try to tell Norton to ignore scanning .Blend files? I remember that I encoutered something like that before (but not related to Blender), Norton scanning files that I want to access (and somehow locked the file) and breaks the application. I fixed the problem by turn off scanning for that specific file type.

Another alternative (if you have extra room on your hard drive) is to put Blender on a separate boot partition and never connect the Blender partition to the web. Your main partition would still use Norton and you would still need to scan new CDs for viruses on it before you used their files in the Blender partition. You could either not have a virus scanner on the Blender partition, or have Norton there and just not have it running autoprotect (eg in Windows make sure with msconfig that it doesn’t startup on boot). This also has the advantage that your Blender partition is very clean and fast. You can have a common logical drive accessible to both the main and the Blender partition to make it easy to access files. It also makes it possible to try Linux or other operating systems easily.

A $30 shareware program called BootItNG is rock solid, very powerful, and convenient for setting up multiple boot configurations (and it also makes terrific compressed backup images of your system, thus replacing both Partition Magic and Norton Ghost). It works through the BIOS on bootup (most users install it from a floppy) so it doesn’t even appear on any of your multiple operating systems. BootItNG has what some consider to be a steep learning curve, but for a Blenderhead it would be a piece a cake.
