not entirely sure what I did wrong, but the particles for the gun didn’t fire too well I suspect an offset problem, then for some reason other turrets stood out when they should have been behind the lazerfire. would this have to do with ambient occlusion? I’m using blender version 2.49b

No advice? May be you need to update yourself to 2.56a !
It is hard to narrow your problem without the .blend
I had a similar problem before, and it was the material that have the transparency button enabled when no transparency was needed. Check the material’s settings for your spaceship.
Other thing that comes to mind is using mask. Unfortunately I suffer of short time memory lost, last time I used 2.49 was more than a year ago, I barely remember.
