Problems with faces and subdivision surface

Hello blenderartists,

Basically, I have this very simple mesh object with only 7 vertices (see attachment).

I’ve added a subsurf modifier, but the faces are abnormally distorted (try to put in loop cuts and you’ll know what I mean).

I already have done the following:

  1. Ctl-N (made sure all vertices have same normal)
  2. Removed all doubles and overlapping faces.

I would like to know what is the basic problem here (by the way, I’ve been using Blender for 2 yrs and occasionally run across this).

and … I can remedy this problem by deleting all the faces and putting the faces back in (but if I have a model with 1000s of faces it is cumbersome).

You need to take more care modelling so you don’t have stray edges overlapping each other
