Problems with Shockwave

Hello, there doesn’t seem to be shockwave for linux, anyone knows what’s is use to replace that ?

so?

[there is flash if that is what you meant, but I assume you know the difference already]

from what I can tell, this doesn’t surprize me much. It seems to be possible to bundle some native code things with shockwave, these would understandably not work in linux well [if they linked to any other library particularly]… at least, that is what I gather

why do you want shockwave anyway? [or flash for that matter]

Nephew likes to play games on cartoonnetwork.com

I’m in windows right now (wow, almost never use windows, it’s scary!!!):

http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

Try that first, it detects OS and browser so it should come up with the right thing.

It’ll have instructions on installing, but just in case:

$ mkdir ~/downloads_foo/flash_foo
$ cd ~/downloads_foo/flash_foo
$ wget http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/shockwave/flash/english/linux_foo.tar.gz
$ tar -xzvf linux_foo.tar.gz
$ cd flash_linux_foo
$ ./install_shockwave_flash_for_linux_foo

[follow instructions]

Note that anywith with “foo” in the name is a replacement for actaul names. You’ll have to read output and figure out what to do from there as to file names.

Really though, follow their instructions first, before trying to decipher the crap I just spat out.

Hope that works. I’m not sure there’s really any difference between “shockwave” and “flash”. As it’s called “Shockwave Flash”. :slight_smile:

Yea, I already have that, but if you try to play anything in linux and with mozilla, you will see that some would work and others don’t. But here’s my info that comes from the browser

I know that lots of shockwave stuff messes up Firefox. It hangs it up and then I can’t use any of the buttons and have to force quit and others just won’t load. That’s why I use Safari for that kind of thing.

Firstly see if this browser is any better with flash:

Then maybe try using WINE.

Opera is an ad ware, rather not.

Could it be Quick Time or SDK is needed ?

Yeah but it’s not like they pop-up in front of you or anything. They’re just banners that stay fixed in the bar up top. They’re very easy to ignore.

Possibly, I know that Quicktime does play flash files. Not sure how much flash content it supports though. However AFAIK, there isn’t an offical Quicktime for Linux. I think you use OpenQuicktime or something.
