Problems with the Knife Tool

A few weeks ago for Christmas I received The essential blender and so far I love it. However when I reached the section of the mesh modeling chapter where it deals with the knife tool I have trouble replicate the example in the book. This is not a constant problem and sometimes I can achieve the desired cut so I am thinking it must be either a problem in my technique or some options that I need to disable. [Edit]: I am using the knife tool in extract mode

Think of the knife tool as just for cutting edges.

Make sure you start to the left of your first edge and below bottom edge.

Think like your pink desired cut must pass over the top of the edges you
want to cut.
