Procedural textures advice

Dear all,
I’ve found procedural grunge and scratch textures very slow at times , even the CG cookie hardwood shader
Once I’ve got the effect I like I have started to bake the defuse textures
Am I doing it wrong or is there another way

How do you use your textures? Are they height maps or just for roughness input? Please share a screenshot of your nodes connected.

Procedural textures can get slow because:

  1. Generator detail settings are set way too high.
  2. Lack of specialized optimized generators can require a lot of generators.
  3. Colored outputs are being used when fac is sufficient. I believe noise texture is faster if using fac.
