Procedural textures for landscapes

Are there already texture plugins for landscapes for blender? If so, can some one tell me where I can find them. Or do I have to create my own? Is there some way I can crete them using the existing procedural textures in blender.

Thanks
Vish

You can subdivide a plane a few times, assign a texture, select all vertices and then press on the NOISE button a few times. Is that what you want?

That would be generation of a terrain given a texture. But on top of that texture, I want to put another texture with a colour. For example, I want a mountain with grass and snow.

The question you are asking really has nothing to do with blender and its functions. It has to do with art. Blender has procedural textures, texture plugins and scripts that can all be used like a box of brushes and paints. It’s quite easy to explain how to use a brush and how to open a can of paint. To explain how to paint a landscape with them is another story.

Most people use images most of the time 1) because procedurals are difficult to paint with and 2) because after all that schlep they still look just like procedurals. Those who get it right are artists and they got good at it by messing with it for months and years, not hours and days. Because of this there is no good documentation for it, just like Leonardo didn’t leave a textbook. He just left his notebook.

My advice is to not try to texture your landscape with procedurals. Do it with the UV editor. Take spheres and planes and the like and just goof off with as many different procedural combinations as you can and save the ones you think look good. When you have a good collection you can append from them into your future projects. By then you will have the skills to use manipulated images to add bumpmaps, specularity maps and all kind of other good stuff.

Well, if most people use images I’m in the minority :stuck_out_tongue:

I actually use procedurals 98% of the time.

For land there are excellent plugins on blenderdungeon, called T_textures which do excellent bumpmapping. Sadly enought I believe that they work only with Blender 2.23

Stefano

nope, they work with 2.27 and tuhopuu too.

:o Great :o

Thanks guys very much for your inputs. By the way what is tuhoppu

Thanks again

Tuhopuu is the experimental Blender source tree.

If you DO want to texture a landscape with a procedural texture, there’s a great plugin to do just that. It’s called T_Terrain, and you can find it at http://www-users.cs.umn.edu/~mein/blender/plugins/texture.html. This plugin allows different textures to be used at different heights and slopes (so you could have snow above 100 units, and on slopes less than 45 degrees).

However, I would suggest using Terragen to generate the terrain. You can also pull the texture for the terrain out of Terragen. I have a tutorial on how to do this on my website:

Hey Ripstrig I know this is and old post but is that tute of yours still up somewhere the link has gone bad now
