Programmatically animating text

Excuse my ignorance, I am coming from a Cinema 4D background.

In C4D, it is possible to animate text, in my case a count-down counter using C.O.F.F.E.E script instead of keying every numeral. Is this possible in Blender?


I had a script that did this in 2.4x, but it relied on scriptlinks. I haven’t tried it in 2.5 yet.
