Project: Artemis suit

Artemis Suit - Helmet
Day One
05/07/2020

Day one work on helmet. Began with pre-existing head model as a dummy. Started with the support structures holding the helmet to the head, cheekpads and such. Made them with a sphere that I deformed with proportional editing until it was a vague, comfortable kidney shape. Duplication and slight modification of the cheek supports created the block in for the dual air filters (in the case that the user is on-planet, in an environment that would otherwise be unsuitable) . Then I started blocking in the visor to suit dimensions available. Like most things in design, working backwards from the necessary inputs and outputs makes everything (at least, “look” like) it’s connected up right. Looking forward to day two and finishing up initial modelling.

Day Two
05/07/2020

! Note that though the dates are the same (July 5th, 2020, I had a sleep cycle in between so idk)

Today I finished the bulk of the modelling for the helmet. The lighting looks a lot better now, and the distinction from lights on to lights off is acceptable. The detail could use a little work on the side, though texturing and normal maps will likely be wonderful. This is going to get real grimy. Asteroid miners tend to be.

Continuation of Day Two, Added base shaders. Tomorrow will be retopology so rendering is more manageable. Then baking, and texturing. I know he looks a little wealthy for an asteroid miner right now, but don’t worry! His helmet was well used before even he got hold of it.

Thank you for reading about my project! I don’t currently have a website, though I’ll update here once I’ve made one.

Playing with a cool camera, though it’s a little too spicy for anything other than abstract right now. Once fine detail is present and the textures are all squared away and nice it’ll be really cool for promotional feeling shots

It will forever amaze me that this is a piece of software that is freely distributed. What an amazing thing.

Bumping for day two progress

Volumetrics are cool!! (Cycles, Volumetric pass 2, 512 samples, AI denoising)

Letting the AI play is cool too! Looks like they’ve painted the scene underwater (Cycles, Volumetric pass 2, 256 samples, AI denoising)

Now that’s a nice hat!

It’s interesting to see those geometric brass grilles and pipes on the more organic-looking shape of the helmet. Looks like they were made using very different processes, which could make for some interesting world building. Stylistically it’s also very near-future meets steampunk, but I wouldn’t say it’s crashing.

Thank you much!

There are headcannon three production processes used in the parts of this helmet. Pressure molded carbon fibre and kevlar everywhere that vaguely looks like a paintball mask, milled metal bits, and an inflated rubber innertube around the neck to pressure fit the helmet to the future planned shoulder assembly. Also planning on building much of the torso via metal bands acting as pins on the joints and cloth sim holding them together. I want the end product to feel like a general purpose designed civilian space suit in the 2040’s that is specced to go in vacuo and also on planet. That’s why the visor has glare protection

On planet would be depressurized for mobility and general ease of life, pressure modulateable so that you can still be a meat balloon in space and not die.
