Projection painting as uv making workflow

I am a fairly new to 3d modeling so i’m working to sort out some of the methodological parts of it. Regarding uv maps, I’ve tended to struggle a bit with non realistic, painting style characters. When trying to make sense of UV maps, it can be unclear what some of the parts are and painting things flat to be wrapped around an image

a method i’ve been considering lately is using projection painting to project front/side paintings I would make by painting over Front side and back screen shots I’d take of the model. Does anyone do this? If this isnt best practice, what are some good ways of learning to paint the flat uv sheets? thanks in advance!
