Why doesn’t x-mirror work when proportional edit is turned on?
I need to modify my model using proportional edit, but I also need to preserve symmetry.
How can I do this?
Checking “topology” doesn’t help.

Use a mirror modifier or use the Grab brush in sculpt mode with sculpt x-symmetry active
I can’t use mirror modifiers as you suggest because I am using shape keys.
I also can’t sculpt because I need to edit stuff like the interior of a character’s mouth.
AHA! … I just discovered something.
I think there’s an update issue with x-mirror and proportional editing.
If I turn on “x-mirror” and “topology”, and then edit using proportional editing, it only affects one side of the model.
BUT
If I then turn off proportional editing, select the edited vertices and “grab” them, the other half of my model will update and snap into place.
So using “x-mirror” and “topology” when proportional editing is off fixes my problem for me. They just simply don’t work when it’s turned on.
I suspect this is a bug.
I will check the buglist, and report it if it’s not there.
Some followup questions though …
What’s the intended method of creating symmetrical shape keys? Do we just use “x-mirror” and “topology” to update the other half of their shape keys, or is there an easier way?
Also,
Is there any way to “hide” parts of your model to sculpt interiors?
