My point was that in any other context that isn’t a checkbox, nobody will understand it means “selected”.
That goal is pretty much already there. I would just replace the X and the tick with a filled/empty checkbox. The problem with onoff switches is how much space thye atke, mainly when there arelots of stacked checkboxes that would ideally take 2 columns.
