Over the time i’ve learnt both, but recently I was led down the path of using bones to control the mouth for visemes, but for now i’ve extensively set them up i’m inclined to go back to keyshapes, just because I find them very precise and capable.
But, not being an overly experienced animator and without proper training, I was wondering what you think?
Personally, I like to rig the jaw and then use shapekeys for the mouth shapes.
But sometimes the weight painting and the keys kinda create some unusual shapes. But the approach is still more or less relevant depending on the dynamics of the mouth and how its going to be used. Realistic or cartoony. I remember watching the Baker series and seeing that Master Ward was able to get away with some simple shapes and used alot of different techniques for a stunning effect.
