Prototyping meshes

Is blender able to prototype meshes? I am sure it can using some sort of parenting thing, but I am really not sure how to do it. I am trying to design a level for a game which uses modular mesh “blocks” to create the level. Each block should have a mesh which is “common” among all the others so that when it is modified, all the others modify along with it. This level will be exported using the Ogre mesh exporter and the .scene exporter for Ogre.

Could someone enlighten me on the subject?

If you copy an object using Alt d, you will get a new object that references the same mesh. You can scale each object differently, but if you scale anything while in edit mode, all objects will change.
