PSD as texture stops working

Hi there!

I like to use PSD files as my textures in Blender to quickly see the changes I’ve made in Photoshop. Usually this works fine, but in some cases, Blender stops reading the PSD file and makes it look like it’s corrupted. Blender doesn’t show the image in the image viewer, also in file browser the thumbnail is not visible.

The PSDs I’m working on can get quite big (200-300 layers, 500+ mb, 4K), so I was wondering does this problem have something to do with PSD limitations, such as number of layers or the file size? Are there some known limits for PSD support in Blender?

I haven’t found a workaround other than starting to save the texture as a PNG and using that as a texture, but that takes a lot of time and is quite tedious.

Thanks in advance!

PS. I’m using Blender 2.75 on Windows 8.1.

  1. How are you getting PSDs imported into Blender?
  2. I think that it may be the file size. If you have one file that keeps crashing, just as a test, make a copy and delete some layers then see if it helps.
  1. I just open the PSD files normally as image textures.
  2. I actually tested this: as soon as i noticed that the PSD wouldn’t load anymore, I deleted/merged a couple of layers, saved the file and reloaded it in Blender, but unfortunately it didn’t fix the problem. The file remained “unreadable”.
