'Punch Card' Modelling - Way of the future?

started getting into making CG stuff with punch card method lately. It can be very detailed, and doesnt take a long time to pick up how to do it. I’m looking to punch card code a way to make it possible to do with Blender. Will be a big leap foward I hope

My god, how did you get that :o

If I’m not mistaken, isn’t that the original punchcard for Suzanne? :o

I’d keep that card, little piece of history right there

Maybe it´s this one?

you put way too much time into that post.

Ooh, there’s a time limit on how long we can spend on posts… ouch… I didn’t read that in the FAQ or Terms Of Use :o

Just for future reference, how long should each post roughly take?

Personally I like that JoOngle took time to make that image. It’s in the spirit of good fun, supporting blender and having a laugh. Good on him/her

Polygone, I’m reasonably sure that was a joke

Oh.

Well as there were no smileys or references to humour, the sentence on it’s own came across in a different manner to me. If it was a joke, then I apologise for barking up a wrong tree.

Such are the joys of interpretting written words

Peace.

LohnC: This is a joke right? A “big leap forward” by switching to punch cards?

he’s serious…

i’ve heard of this mysterious “punch card modeling”

its along the lines of turning anything to gold and flying pink farm animals :]

sings “Pigs - Pink Floyd”

Ah, is this the secret xdugef?

Oh.

yeah, it was not that serious.

hey no jokes allowed this is a serious topic!

and if one is to joke make sure there is either a >D - =D - or 8) after the sentance  >D =D 8)

glad people have been finding intrest in it, and Joongle seems to be going great with it, even collecting the old ones!

I service some washing machines that use punch cards. Maybe we could all get together and work out some way to port them to blender. This would allow blending in real time, with real 3d objects plus the objects are already animated! No paths and such to fiddle with.
Open the front door and place in a few 3d objects and then blend them up.
Use the auto detergent dispenser to add any combination of colours.
The spin cycle could then be used to render the resultant model.
Just think a little bit laterally now… Laundromats that go out of business can become render farms!
Now just reach in and TOUCH the model! Blender comes alive for you!

The completed models might be a little bit unpredictable for a start, but hey this is art.

Just not sure how to do mirroring…

The best way is to get a long room and line all the washing machines against one wall. Along the other you put the mirrors.

If you buy an old ballet hall that’ll make the mirroring easier…

No, man, he’s dead serious.

I thought punch cards were lituraly thrown out the window.

Cause to store atleast 1MB of data you would need thousands of punch cards.

Imagine if you made a mistake in your model. Therrs no undo and you cant make up back ups easily. :-?

of course you can undo ! all you need is a photocopier. just throw away the recent change and start from an old copy :]

(just remember to “save” often)
