Punch hole in CGSphere grid

I’ve downloaded the CGSphere template (www.cgsphere.com) and have imported the ‘wave’ into a blank scene and now wish to ‘punch’ a hole through this object.

I’ve created a circle, extruded it a small amount then select it and the ‘wave’ and selected ‘difference’ in the boolean command but what results is nothing short of a disaster!

Can anyone help in letting me know what I need to do to create a hole please?

Two points about using Blender’s current boolean system:

  1. Don’t
  2. See point 1.

I take it from your post that you want a circular hole punched through the mesh of the CGSphere “Grid” object that forms the backdrop of the picture right?

Read this first before continuing. Especially the end of point 1. If you still want to do it then… (Or if you need a circular hole in anything else in the future…)

  • In edit mode, set your selection to “Face Select”. Pick the face you want to punch a hole through.
  • Hit “X-Key” and select “Face”
  • Hit “E” to extrude the edges of the face, but don’t drag it anywhere.
  • Hit “S” to scale the edges in a bit and click to confirm
  • Now Hit “W” and subdivide to get a better definition
  • Switch to vertex selection mode.
  • With all the points that make up the hole selected, hit"Ctrl-Shift-S" and move the cursor to the right to put the points in a circle. (Actually a sphere, but they should all be in the same plane so - a circle).
  • Now extrude the ring of points in the direction you want the hole to go.
  • Subdivide and set smooth to taste
  • Bake in moderate oven for 15 minutes, serves 4.

Wow! I didn’t know that could be done. Thanks.

It’s not for the compo, my skills aren’t good enough for that (yet), but the ‘curve’ is really good to use as a backdrop and likewise my skills aren’t good enough to understand how the hell to create a similar ‘wavey-plane’.

But again, many thanks, that’s certainly going to help for any future work.
