Pushpin Effect

Hi All,

Here’s a technique I recently saw that was created in Houdini which got me wondering how to achieve this in Blender. Well here’s what I came up with…

This setup uses dupliverts of a “pushpin” object on a grid surface. The surface is displaced by a grayscale image (but could be a movie if you like) to raise and lower the Pushpins.
Here’s an image

… and here’s the .blend http://www.pasteall.org/blend/4483

I hope it helps someone!

Hey, that’s pretty cool Comein… I like it.

Nice displacement example. Thanks

thanks guys!

just a quick fyi. i found in 2.49b that you needed to add a build modifier to get it to animate. set the build time to 1. i think the build modifier caused blender to recalculate the mesh or something. otherwise it just wouldn’t update frame by frame. haven’t tested in 2.5.
