Python Error! Please Help! Can't Import .3ds!!

hello,
for some reason python is having an error. When i go to import a .3ds file, it tells me…
“Python script error: check console”
what’s going on and how can i fix it?

What does it say in the console ?
What version of blender are you using ?

I’m using blender 2.49b
Python version 2.6.2
the console says-
TypeError: object of type ‘NoneType’ has no len()

no sure what that means
if someone could help me out that’d be great!
