Quad shading issue on a simple roof mesh

I just started working on a simple building mesh and after finishing the basic framework of the roof I turned on a matcap to check for any shading issues and I noticed this:

Now I may be misunderstanding the way matcap works, as I’m relatively new to making meshes, but that isn’t how I imagined it would look. I expected the lines to all be straight as in the preview, but they are all bent. When I look at it in default smooth shade view, the shading around those faces doesn’t look right either. I would greatly appreciate anyone who can explain what I’ve done wrong.

You’ve selected a specific preview material. Just select the 1st one for the “default” look:

Good luck.

Thank you for you reply. I guess I didn’t understand how the matcap worked because the lines on your geometry aren’t straight either. But I know that something is wrong with my mesh because the shading doesn’t look quite right.

I would expect the corner to be consistent all the way up the roof, but as you can see, it glitches out near the bottom corner. Any ideas?

Try Flat Shading:

Good luck!

If you want it to look smooth you need good topology and lots of edges.

The images have the same appearance, but look different depending on the amount of edges.

In settings like the image, the difference between the two seems small.

Welcome :tada:

Why ? You are using smooth shading on a very edgy and low poly model… whatdo you expect ?

Just add the texture you want and then have another look…

See ?? It’s a house…

A word of advice you will hear over and over…SCALE and to be more precise…SET SCALE… in Object mode hit CTRL + A and select set scale on anything that you have changed from its initial addition. If you Move, rescale, add to, or delete from anything…CTRL + A > Apply SCALE, ROTATION, LOCATION, or ALL DEFORMS…

Dimensions can be anything, but SCALE needs and must remain at 1,1,1.
If it isn’t then you will start to see strange things happen as you work, textures don’t look right, and addons or Modifiers don’t work right. Anything can happen that is just unexplained and hard to diagnose and long after the point where you should have set scale…

Learn to do it now and save yourself a lot of grief later…

Note: this will not necessarily fix your current problem
