Question about Blender for Mac; Windows+Mac users will understand better

Forgive my stupidity about macs if there is some present, but I have a question about Blender for mac, and hope you can answer it! :spin:
I use XP and Vista, and have hardly used macs, but my school computer has teh macz.
On Windows, you can either download the installer or the ZIP archive, which you can just unpack and open Blender directly from, no installing necessary, so you can put it on yer pen drive and plug it in another computer.
My question about macs is this: Do macs have a direct software zip archive function? Meaning you can just put it on your pen drive and plug it into another computer which you can directly open it from? If so, is there a zip archive of Blender for mac, or a software which can crush it into one?
As before, forgive if this is a stupid question, I hardly know about Macs.
And if this is in the wrong forum, forgive me again.
Thanks!

That’s pretty much how the mac blender comes packaged. It’s in a DMG file which is a compressed disk image, unless there’s extra security at your school, it should just open right up like a ZIP. Then the blender application is a single file that you doubleclick.

Thanks a hugic bunch!

EDIT:

Is there a Python dmg like that too? Just in case i need to run/write some scripts, y’ know?

I can partly answer your question

yes Mac has a zip archive function but I have never run blender from a usb drive
download the version for mac (it should unzip itself after the download) and then it should work if your run it
from your usb drive

Ok, but I don’t have mac, so would it still unzip itself? Or can I put it on my USB drive, take it to school, and unzip it there?Would that work?

EDIT:
Nevermind, Python already comes on Mac, but it may be older, so . . . whatever.

The default python version on at least newer macs is 2.3 IIRC. You can get the right blender build from blender.org.

Thanks for the help! But one final overall question,
Will opening the dmg just open Blender like a zip archive? Or will it install? I looked dmg upon wikipedia, but they didn’t give info on that.
