What is the best way to install/build Crystal Space and Crystal Entity Layer with windows 2000 and Linux?
Is there an installer for CP and CEL?
Some questions about linux.
I’ve been thinking about linux. Does it have an image viewer?
Can I what flash animations (.swf) on linux?
what about other a/v formats (.wav .mp3 .ogg .avi .mov .flv .vob)?
Can it use firefox?
How would I get drivers for my video, sound, and scanner?
What is the best version?
If my questions are answered I’ll get a copy of linux and try it out.
For non-hackers I recommend Ubuntu.
I have installed CS and CEL on Linux- they work flawlessly.
If you find a tutorial, you can set about anything up very easy.
There is no Flash Player for Linux for amd64 computers, but you can install the x86 edition.
I strongly recommend installing it. Since I installed it, I’ve deleted Windows.
How would I get drivers for my video, sound, and scanner?
that depends entirely on the make, some sound cards donut work well in Linux(like mine, no audio capture). video cards are normally fine unless its ati, nvidia is usaly the easiest to get working from what i understand(and also is has the best performance with blender). scanners seem to eather work completely or don’t work at all.
do a Google sertch for
moddle of card/scanner/printer etc+ Linux driver/ Linux problems
i am running 100% Ubuntu, its just so fast!
video playback is normally better under Linux, it sometimes freezes in windows
Does it have an image viewer?
yes;)
Can it use Firefox?
yes, its the dafelt browser in Ubuntu
also, do you use a wireless network/ usb modem, both of these can be problomatic
ubuntu can run as a live cd (run everything of the cd) so you can try it out before installing it, then you can dual boot with windows until you know how to use it
the live cd iso is 700 megabytes, and depending on your connection can take forever to download
OMG! thanks for a good laugh(i know you asked that intentionally for fun[please say you did!])
anyways, yes you can watch/do those things, and as was said there might be some hardware problems, all so chances are, there might be none/close to none(if you get lucky in the sense of having just the right hardware, witch is totally possible)…
My pc is a P.O.S compaq fom factor made for windows 2000 and I swapped the cd drive for a dvd/cd burner added an ati 64 mb graphics card and a usb 2.0 card. I also have a lexmark 74/75 all-in-one printer-scanner-copier.
I have no internet access. Instead I use the College library’s computers and a 2 gig jumpdrive.
I was afraid I would have to find every basic program for linux, but I am glad that is not the case. I want to jump from windows 2000 cold-turkey. I’m also going to try to replace the 20 gig hd with a 40 gig hd.
(I want to be free from the WindowsMatrix.)
I also want to be able to build any program I come across so if I could get links to some program sites (installers, builds) and some good sites for building programs I would appericate it.
Help Internet Explorer is molesting me with pop-ups.
Don’t worry about your ati card that much… I have one and it worked fine in ubuntu (with compiz fusion also!) also, if your lucky, than your graphics card maybe supported for the opensource ati drivers! yay!
Also, don’t worry about finding programs… three words: synaptic package manager. It’s one of the greatest features in linux.
download the .deb packages you need, and put them on a jumpdrive,cd,dvd and then transfer them to your offline system…
works perfectly until you get an app with lots of dependency’s, then you end up switching pc’s every few munites, it can take an hower or more just to get an app installed.
I reccommended bringing the pc over so you can hook it up online, installling all the files, than putting it back. When I was installing a wireless card in linux and didnt have internet… I don’t want to talk about it
In linux… hooking it up online is the easiest way, I’m running ubuntu right now and all I had to do was add this to my sources, and BOOM there it was! right in synaptic! precompiled and evrything. It even comes with an amazing plugin for blender… b2cs (blender 2 crystal space)
