Question about materials and their actions and f-curves

When I create a new material by copying another, the actions are linked. I can see in the outliner that they share the action, but I don’t know how to unlink one to give it its own action. In the dopesheet/action editor the actions do not appear in the list.

Can anyone help me understand this? Thanks.

in your materials tab right next to the name of the material there is a number indicating the number of users of this material.
if you click it you make it a new material for the selected object, which can be animated seperately.

In the meantime I’d found the NLA can be great for what I was trying to do also.
