Question about selecting parts of a mesh

Hello,

Say for example, I imported a model where the character is wearing various bits of armor. The main body, helmet, shoulder pads, etc are all in the same object, and there does not appear to be anything on separate layers. However, I can see that the different parts have been color coded differently. I’m intuitively thinking there must be a way to select only interconnected vertices so that I may edit each part separately. How should I go about doing this?

Select a vertex and press Ctrl+L to select vertices linked to it or with your curser over a vertex press L to do the same
You can separate selected vertices into a new object with shortcut P (note the different separate options)
