QUESTION: Modeling Dirt

Hi all

I’ve got the task of modeling/texturing dirt (as in the stuff that is at the bottom of flower beds), the crumbly dark brown/black stuff that roses grow out of. Has anyone done this before? Due to the relatively close camera, just taking a fractalized plain with some dirt texture won’t suffice…

Cheers

Hamu

just model the basic shape, then give it musgrave texture, turn the noise size way down, then, in materials window, in the map to buttons, click ‘col’ off, and click ‘nor’ and turn the ‘nor’ slider up a bit. with a little tweaking, this will make dirt that is quite passable even for close camera proximity. you may want to layer on an additional normals map, perhaps a turbulent marble texture or something.
