Question on SouthernShotty's Character Tutorial (Texture Paint Gradient issue)

Hey everyone,

I’m following @Southernshotty recent “Model Your First Character in Blender 3D” tutorial and ran into an issue during the texture painting section.

In the video when he applies the gradient fill, the belly under the wings looks darker, while the wings themselves stay lighter. But when I select the whole body and wings (as instructed in the video) to apply the gradient, everything turns out exactly the same uniform color. I don’t get that nice separation or depth under the wings.

Here’s his version in the video:

What am I missing here? How do I get mine to look like his?

Thanks in advance!

Have you changed the display from “Flat” to “Texture” as seen at 24:17 in the video?

Yes, I had done that.

Maybe after showing the basics of gradient painting some further retouching is done to darken the lower part and that is not shown in the video.

At timestamp ~22:00 this also is very flat and at the mentioned from @lqppro one this does look already “changed”… so because it is flat and texture there is usually no further ligthing involved (at least AFAIK).. so: He cheated ? :winking_face_with_tongue:

I think he “simply” did this gradient painingt again with body and wings separated so there is a slight difference which makes the body a little darker at the “belly” already.

I tried that too, but I couldn’t get the same effect as in the video, where only the belly part is darker. If I use gradient painting again, all parts of the wing end up becoming inconsistent in color with the body.

I never said this is easy

So.. to get different gradients one has to select them individually and try this several times.. (to see “both” i switched from Texture Paint to “Shading” workspace.. it’s easier thant to unhide everthing and switch to Ojject mode and back ← it’s not a simple workflow to use.. )

I’d select the body with Face Select Masking turned on and repeat the gradient stroke then to slightly darken only the body/undercarriage.
