Questions about Elephants Dream

With the primiere nearing, I wanted to get a couple things strait. Any answers would be appreciated.

  1. How long is it?

I always thought that it was a short (10-20 minutes) but from reading I get the impression that it is full length (1+ hours). Which one is right?

  1. When will it be available for download?

No clue on this one, but I was wondering when I could watch it (as I didn’t buy the DVD)

If you check the Blender.org news or search these forums you’ll find out when it’s available for download. I can’t remember off hand but I think it’s a month or two after the premiere…

quoted from the site

“The project will last from September to March 2006. We expect to deliver the DVDs in third week of March. The contents of the DVD will not be published on blender.org until May.”

10 minutes, +/- 20 secs…

and 45 minutes of credits.

The fonts used must be really big.

Nah, it just scrolls very slowly. Also, Ton is mentioned 7 times.

harkyman,

that is hilarious  (and probably not too far from the truth hehe)

maccam912,

  1. andy covered the length (10 minutes)
  2. the DVD is probably more like end of April, and then available for download mid-May.

LetterRip

wow, 10 minutes?

damn…

Yes, but if it took about a year to make 10 minutes, just think how good the 10 minutes will be.

After the dvd owners have had their own premiere.
Dvd production time is predicted to take 2 weeks after next friday.

So, I’d say at least another month.

we’ve waited this long, what’s another month…

can’t wait to see it, i’ll probably watch it 3x in a row the first time so make that a half hour!

I’ve been discussing some ideas with Ton over the comentary track, that should give some intereseting material as well.

I’m not sure when the dvd content (making_of, comentary, etc) will be available for download. I guess a broadband provider can easely offer the dvd(s) for download, but that will probably be 16Gb of download.
And offering the separate dvd movies would mean a dvd-rip I think.
We can look at that in the months to come.

10 minutes, eh? /me smiles because he didn’t pay for the DVD.

yup, the credits roll is indeed a bit longish [not dramatically though, it’s sadly still shorter than the movie ;)]… mostly due to the long list of dvd sponsors that helped us with their support

we rendered the credits today, and since that was going quite slow we had a little time off to look at all the names scrolling past. and man, this was just amazing. without your help this movie would not have been possible in the first place.
like promised, the sponsors who bought the dvd before september will be in the credits of the film, next friday in cinema but also on the dvd.

a huge thanks to you guys!

see ya!

dante,

the DVD contains all of the production files needed to rerender the project - ie you will learn a great deal about rigging, have a large number of high quality textures, and models etc. that can be repurposed to your own project.

Also the Orange project has been the driver behind a number of the huge improvements in the animation, texturing, and rendering system.

We who didn’t buy a DVD have to wait a full month or two to see the movie on Blender.org? :o

Now I assume since this is an open/free movie, making the DVD content available on the internet for free before Blender.org’s official release is legal, is it?

/me smiles because he will be listed in the credits. the smile grows bigger still because he realizes he had a small part in helping this great project, program, and all people involved!

It is released under the Creative Commons AFAIK. So it depends largely on what clauses they chose.

/me really couldn’t care any less

  1. I suck ass at 3D art and have pretty much lost interest in creating it, at least for now.

  2. I understand that the cost of the DVD helped to fuel PO. 40 bucks is way too much for me, especaily since the included blends are damn near worthless to me.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad this whole thing happened. But I think the DVDs were majorly overpriced for people like me who really just want to see the movie. If it was more reasonable ($12 plus shipping, say) I would have bought 2! I have nothing agaisnt supporting the cause but 40 dollars is way more than the DVD or the new features Blender is worth to me.
