questions about making bit map fonts for the GE?

Hi everyone, I know you can use a script to make bitmap fonts that work in the blender game engine. Like the one on Blendenzo site:http://www.blendenzo.com/tutFTBlender.html
My first question is; can you use other programs to make bitmap fonts as well? (There seem to be lots of free ones around like this one maybe http://www.chadvernon.com/blog/tutorials/managed-directx-2/bitmap-fonts/).

My second question is, if you can use an other app, does the order of the fonts in the generated bitmap have to be in some specific order, for it to work in the game engine?

And are there other technical issues I need to be aware of if I choose to make the bitmap image in another program.

I think it has to do with the top 2,3 or 4 rows of pixels on the bitmap. Some sort of alien code that requires a higher order to translate.

There is one such higher being who may be able to shed light on the topic, his user name is ashsid and he created a bitmap font creator. Perhaps send him a PM?
