Quick Frosted Glass

Hi All,
I had a look at the frosted glass example using nodes (i can’t find the link now) and I noticed that it was really slow to render, my duo 2.4gHz with threads was just inching along. IMO hardly usable for animation.

I got to tweaking the original idea of making a really small noisy normal map, but that is actually very noisy. However, I found that tweaking the shader parameters, esp using toon for the specular works quite nicely.
check it out:

Before tweaking, just a noisemap:

Excellent!

Really cool workaround. I know this is gonna come in handy!

THanks!

ya it is slow because to get a grain free result you need just few bump maps arg …

blured raytraced refraction would just do the job for us.

Yeah I agree, I toyed with the conetrace in yafray, looks really nice, but also takes ages.
FYI in the upper image I also stacked different bumpmaps to approach the node method, to no avail as you can see. The node method is still a really innovative way of using nodes, though.
Inspired me to try to blur the reflection using composite nodes, works, but I need to hammer out some details.

This is great, will rewrite this as a tutorial later for everyone else thanx
