I had a question concerning my panel-creation techniques. I posted some screenshots in my sketchbook (post 606) but decided to create a new post here for further exploration. (I’m avoiding unrelated posts there mostly, other than my art.) If you have any questions concerning it, please post them here.
Yes, the Knife tool is perfect for irregular cuts. The only potential problem is that sometimes when you inset the faces, they overlap. That can create issues when you invert the selection to delete the ‘groove’ faces. You can also manually add irregular cuts with the Knife tool AFTER you do the initial inset-inverse delete. Dan Brown’s paneling technique YT video explains how to best create parallel cuts afterward even so I won’t expound here. (Also, to clarify - these aren’t techniques I discovered. Just the techniques I’ve settled on that work best for me. I didn’t originate any breakthrough processes.

…Once you get the main steps down you can easily add more base sections and duplicate specific faces, copy them to a separate layer and rejoin with your panels layer. It’s a great way to selectively add new parts to your panels layer as desired…
To further clarify - you can use other ‘base’ objects to selectively copy faces that you want to also panel-cut. Then you copy those faces. While those faces are active, separate-by-selection to a new layer. Then take that newly-created layer and join it to your panels layer. Doing that will automatically incorporate any of your panel-layer modifiers to them. Then you can continue cutting and manually create other seams in those faces to match.

Hello again. Could you maybe give short few sentences about your work in textures? In particular, two things - “bolts”, and wearing on edges, for example, as in Your model RI Seeker Mrk5. Are bolts some “stamp” brush? I know those are simple questions… Sorry about that 
I purchased a Substance Painter Indie license a few years ago. I prefer the way it works with texture-creation. I initially spent A LOT of time creating custom layer-sets and then use those as foundations for new projects. I just like how much easier it is (for me) to bake textures sets on the fly. Since my finished work is intended to be grungy and messy I don’t spend a lot of time UV-unwrapping in B3D either. I generally use Smart-UV-Project, using a lot of custom seams I create, then export the model to SP. From there I can work faster to create the different looks I desire. I used normal stamps for the RI Seeker Mrk5 bolts. (That’s generally because I can imply more refined details quickly with normal stamps.) I don’t always use them . . . just depends on how long I want to spend with each model. I tend to get impatient and want to move to the next project when modeling. I prefer to spend the time texturing/painting. Side-note: I do create all of my custom decals in Photoshop and GIMP then import decal sheets to use within SP. The edge-wear is driven by the geometry within SP. You can achieve similar results within B3D with texture nodes.
Also - to add modeled bolts, just create a separate object to look like what you want. Make sure its rotation center is underneath and in the exact middle. Then you can duplicate/instance them and place on your main surface as desired. (Be sure you have face-snapping enabled so it will place them exactly on the hull surface for example.)
