When I try to save a sequence (image strip) as an AVI with a codec, it tells me something along the lines of “cannot find blahblahblahxxxx-xxxx.avi”. Does this mean that I need to save it as uncompressed AVI first, then add that as a movie strip and save IT with AVI codec?

What are you trying to save it as? AVI Codec or AVI JPEG?
Set the path to render to, choose the codec you want to use within the avi container, avi is not a codec, press the animation button to encode to the path you set. there is no save as for video encoding
